NIGERIA MILITARY DECLARES IPOB TERRORIST INSTITUTION

The Defence Headquarters has branded the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a “militant terrorist institution" and urged parents to dissuade their wards from joining the group.
However, in a statement read in Abuja on Friday, Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, the Director, Defence Information (DDI), restated the commitment of the Armed Forces to confront “all security challenges facing the country.’’
Others include: Militant possession and use of weapons (stones, molotov cocktails, machetes and broken bottles among others) on a military patrol on the September 10; physical confrontation of troops by Nnamdi Kanu and other IPOB actors at a checkpoint on September 11, 2017 and also attempts to snatch their rifles and attack by IPOB members at a military checkpoint on September 12, 2017, at Isiala Ngwa, where one IPOB actor attempted to snatch a female soldier’s rifle.

The Nnamdi Kanu-led IPOB was previously a relatively passive organisation. In the last one year, however, it has become confrontational with the authorities, demanding the creation of an independent state of Biafra. It is also threatening to make the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State impossible.Kanu opted out of a peace meeting with South-East governors on the demands of his group scheduled for yesterday.
In a swift reaction, the IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu told The Channels Television in a telephone interview yesterday that IPOB is a non-violent group and should not be tagged a terrorist group.
