NEMA STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVED SERVICES

Recent disaster and emergency incidents in Nigeria call for stronger collaboration, deep reflection, confidence and consensus building in the humanitarian community.
The director general, national emergency management agency, NEMA, Mustapha Maihaja, said this during a four-day workshop on the review and update of the national plan which opened on Wednesday in keffi, Nasarawa state, north central Nigeria.
Across the globe, national disaster agencies operate continuously, even during normal times, and oversee general coordination of disaster management, focusing particularly on vulnerability assessment, mitigation and preparedness. At the national level in Nigeria, this role is filled by the national emergency management agency, NEMA, which coordinates and implements disaster management activities.Experts are of the view that the most successful multi-hazard emergency contingency planning process takes place within the context of an effective institutional framework for disaster management.

Therefore, this four-day Keffi workshop on the review and update of the multi-hazard contingency plan, is partly to consolidate and strengthen commitment to a coordinated national system for preparedness and response to disaster incidences, improve coordination and co-operation among key players by identifying and delineating roles and responsibilities.

Some of the experts recommended that NEMA continues to remain in constant contact with all other relevant sister agencies even when there is no immediate disaster or emergency, with each agency ensuring that its emergency response plans and procedures are up to date, and ready for use.
